Otunba Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to dismantle his economic team, citing concerns over its lack of diversity and pro-Yoruba bias.
Speaking at an interactive session with journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Tuesday, Showunmi described the economic team as “careless” in managing the country’s diversity.
“They have not balanced their cabinet in a way that sensible people who are not bigots can accept that they have tried to be inclusive,” he said.
Showunmi also criticized the administration’s economic policies, particularly the devaluation of the naira, which he claimed has impoverished many Nigerians.
He accused the government of running a “beggarly economy” by constantly providing palliatives to citizens instead of addressing the economy’s fundamental issues.

The PDP chieftain cautioned that the economic team’s composition, which he believes favors one ethnic group, is detrimental to the country’s federalism.
“Any government that takes all the finance infrastructure, all the revenue infrastructure, all the spending infrastructure, and the leadership of same to be in one ethnic group, will be wrong for the nature of our own type of federalism,” he said.
Showunmi urged President Tinubu to dismantle the economic team, stating, “He should dismantle that economic team that is too pro-Yoruba as a way of letting people know that he is not doing it because he wants to favour (Yorubas).
“After all, their policies have not favoured us other than it has impacted on others.”
Additionally, Showunmi tackled the Tinubu-led ECOWAS on its handling of the crisis that led to Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso withdrawing from the regional body, describing it as amateurish.
He emphasized the importance of reorienting citizens on the dangers of electing individuals with questionable wealth or integrity into leadership positions.
