Chelsea in talks to sign Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson
Chelsea has engaged in positive initial discussions regarding a deal for Danny Welbeck from Brighton. The striker, who has a year remaining on his contract, is reportedly keen on a move to Stamford Bridge. There is optimism from Chelsea’s side that an agreement can be reached for Welbeck, who scored 13 league goals last season and 10 in the campaign before that.
Brighton has indicated they would not hinder Welbeck’s departure if a fair price is agreed upon. His potential arrival aligns with Chelsea’s reported focus on acquiring physically imposing players with Premier League experience this summer. Welbeck’s individual record includes 201 matches since joining Brighton in 2020, during which he has scored 51 goals.
Interest in Experienced Midfielder
In addition to Welbeck, Chelsea is also interested in signing Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson. The England international has a year left on his Brentford contract. Brentford is reportedly willing to allow Henderson to leave on a free transfer, though this is not guaranteed if multiple clubs express interest. Henderson made 34 appearances for Brentford last season after joining from Ajax.
Henderson is currently recovering from an arm injury. He sustained this injury after falling over advertising hoardings while celebrating England’s last-16 victory over Mexico during the 2026 World Cup. His character, leadership qualities, and experience are attributes Chelsea is looking to add to their squad this summer.
Shift in Transfer Strategy
The pursuit of both Welbeck and Henderson signals a potential shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy. Influential owner Behdad Eghbali indicated in April that the club’s model of signing young players needed a “tweak.” This new approach appears to prioritise experienced players. The club had previously shown interest in midfielder Granit Xhaka earlier this summer.
The potential arrival of Welbeck could raise questions about the futures of current Chelsea strikers, including Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Marc Guiu. Jackson is reportedly open to leaving amid interest from Aston Villa, while Delap is increasingly expected to depart. There is also uncertainty surrounding the future of Emmanuel Emegha, despite his recent move to Chelsea from Strasbourg.
The club’s manager, Xabi Alonso, is reportedly seeking experience and strong personalities to address shortcomings that contributed to the team’s 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Welbeck’s consistent performance in the Premier League, where he featured in 37 of Brighton’s 38 games last season, scoring 13 goals, highlights his continued effectiveness. His ability to hold up the ball and involve teammates is also noted. Welbeck signed a 12-month contract extension with Brighton in March, with his current deal set to run until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Chelsea has acquired several players from Brighton in recent seasons, including Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Robert Sanchez. Additionally, several Brighton staff members, such as sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell, have moved to Stamford Bridge over the past four years.
