Tom Kim wins Genesis Scottish Open

Tom Kim secured his fourth PGA Tour title at the Genesis Scottish Open, concluding a 1,001-day wait for a win on the tour. Kim’s performance at the Renaissance Club saw him finish two shots ahead of Min Woo Lee, marking his first worldwide victory since the 2023 Shriners Children’s Open.
Kim entered the final round one shot behind co-leaders Robert MacIntyre, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Lee. A blemish-free round of 65 propelled him to the top of the leaderboard, ending the tournament at 17 under par. Lee posted a three-under 67, placing him second.
Kim’s Path to Victory
Kim, playing in the group ahead, quickly moved level with the leaders by recording two birdies within his first four holes. He further extended his advantage by capitalising on the par-five seventh and sinking a 15-foot putt for another birdie on the 10th hole.
Meanwhile, MacIntyre experienced setbacks, recording four bogeys across a seven-hole stretch starting from the fourth. Lee managed to stay within contention, matching Kim’s birdie at the 12th and adding another at the 14th, briefly narrowing the gap to one shot. However, Kim solidified his lead with a six-foot birdie on the 16th, before parring his final two holes to secure the win.
Reflecting on his performance, Kim stated that he played as well as he could have under pressure, executing shots when necessary. He expressed pride in maintaining composure and treating each shot individually.
Fitzpatrick’s round included four birdies and three bogeys, resulting in a one-under 69. MacIntyre concluded his week at 13 under, following a 30-foot eagle on the 12th and two subsequent birdies.
Open Qualification and McIlroy’s Performance
As a result of their finishes, Johnny Keefer, Michael Thorbjornsen, and Victor Perez qualified for The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale. Keefer secured a spot as one of the top three players not already exempt for the tournament. Thorbjornsen finished tied-seventh, while Perez concluded in tied-ninth.
Rory McIlroy made a significant charge on Sunday, recording five birdies in his initial seven holes. His final-round 64 matched his lowest of the season, elevating him to tied-seventh alongside Thorbjornsen. Despite this strong finish, McIlroy ended five strokes behind the leader, having struggled in the fog-affected third round where he posted a 73 with only one birdie.

McIlroy acknowledged issues with his irons, particularly when playing in a left-to-right wind, a recurring challenge for him this season. He indicated his intention to address this problem before heading to Royal Birkdale. McIlroy noted that while there were positive aspects to his play, there were also areas requiring improvement.
Defending champion Chris Gotterup and US Open winner Wyndham Clark finished tied-11th and tied-13th, respectively, after both carding one-over 71s.
