Bellingham, Hart, and Kane on Tuchel’s Post-Match Comments

Following England’s 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway, which secured a semi-final spot against Argentina, midfielder Jude Bellingham’s reaction to comments made by manager Thomas Tuchel has drawn attention. Former goalkeeper Joe Hart and England captain Harry Kane have both defended Bellingham’s response.
The tension arose after Tuchel expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance in Miami, despite the win. Tuchel stated he was “not happy with the performance” and that England “got lucky.” When informed of these remarks, Bellingham, visibly tired after the match, responded to ITV with, “Yeah, well, whatever.” He then defended his teammates’ efforts during the demanding game played in the Florida heat.
Bellingham suggested that Tuchel might not fully understand the physical toll of playing in such conditions against strong opponents like Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard, Antonio Nusa, and Alexander Sorloth. He emphasized that it was a tough shift, and his thoughts and appreciation went to the players who had put in a tough shift out there.
Reactions and Defenses
Joe Hart criticized the line of questioning directed at Bellingham during the post-match interview on BBC One, calling it “a bit naughty.” Hart explained that focusing only on the negative aspects of Tuchel’s comments would naturally provoke a defensive reaction from Bellingham, who had just achieved something significant.
Hart believes that any perceived tension between the player and manager would dissipate once they were behind closed doors. He suggested that Tuchel would likely expect such a reaction from Bellingham, especially given the emotional context of reaching a semi-final. Hart added that as a player coming off an emotional victory, he would react similarly.
Captain Harry Kane also weighed in on the situation, stating that the England squad is “completely together.” Speaking to BBC Sport, Kane highlighted that Bellingham was asked about the comments just minutes after a demanding match and did not fully know what had been said. Kane dismissed attempts to create division, calling it an “English thing to do at these major tournaments,” and stressed that the team’s togetherness is crucial to their success.
Kane acknowledged that Tuchel’s managerial style differs from his predecessor, Sir Gareth Southgate, but noted that Tuchel “wears his heart on his sleeve” and his unscripted communication is appreciated by the players. Kane stated that the team understands Tuchel’s approach and believes in him as one of the best managers in the world.
Tuchel’s Clarification and Upcoming Match
Despite the public exchange, Tuchel quickly sought to downplay any potential rift, aiming to prevent it from destabilizing England’s World Cup campaign. He clarified that his criticisms stemmed from high standards and not a lack of respect for his players. Tuchel insisted that the situation had been “blown up” by the media and affirmed that his relationship with the squad remained strong.
Tuchel maintained his stance on the team’s performance, stating, “The head of mine is not fully satisfied and not 100 per cent happy with the way we played, and I stand by it.” He expressed belief that the team could play faster and more clinically, citing too many unforced errors and technical mistakes. However, he emphasized that there was “no disconnect” between himself and his team, expressing his full commitment and affection for his players.
England is now preparing for a semi-final clash against Argentina. This match presents a significant challenge, with left-back Nico O’Reilly looking forward to a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to face Lionel Messi. Messi, who began the tournament with a hat-trick against Algeria, has since scored more goals, placing him joint-first with France’s Kylian Mbappe in the Golden Boot race. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford cautioned against focusing solely on Messi, highlighting the need to consider Argentina’s other strengths and potential weaknesses.
The winner of the semi-final will proceed to face either France or Spain, who are scheduled to play each other on Tuesday.
