Newcastle United’s Summer Transfer Shake-Up

Bruno Guimaraes’ future at Newcastle
Bruno Guimaraes has communicated his desire to explore an opportunity with Arsenal if an acceptable offer is made to Newcastle. This interest is reportedly driven by footballing ambitions rather than financial considerations, as Guimaraes is currently Newcastle’s highest earner. He is said to believe that winning titles may not happen at Newcastle in the near future and wishes to pursue that goal with Arsenal.
Guimaraes also wants to ensure that Newcastle receives a high fee should he depart. However, Arsenal has not yet made any direct contact with Newcastle regarding his availability. Newcastle officials are reportedly surprised by discussions of his potential departure given the lack of communication from Arsenal, suggesting that agents have been driving these conversations. Until a concrete offer is presented, Newcastle views Guimaraes as not for sale and is keen to retain him.
Transfer activity and club strategy
Newcastle is undergoing a significant squad restructure this summer, with numerous changes anticipated. The club has already seen the departure of Anthony Gordon. The club’s transfer strategy focuses on acquiring players between certain age ranges and within specific price parameters. However, they have shown a willingness to slightly exceed these guidelines for particular targets.
An example of this was the verbally agreed deal for Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, a player who was a top target. Despite a verbal agreement on terms with Freiburg and the player, Aston Villa later made an offer matching the verbally agreed deal, with Manzambi’s preference understood to be Villa, reportedly influenced by the offer of Champions League football. Newcastle is also looking to bring in a number one goalkeeper, with a long-standing interest in James Trafford, and a full-back who can play on either side, preferably left-back.

The club’s new transfer policy emphasizes signing younger players with high potential, a model akin to Borussia Dortmund, aiming to develop talent and compete for trophies. This approach is supported by manager Eddie Howe, who is aligned with the sporting director and chief executive on this strategy. The absence of European football next season is seen as an advantage, allowing for more training time and potentially helping new players integrate into the squad.
Potential departures and squad revamp
Beyond Guimaraes, other players could also leave Newcastle this summer as part of the squad revamp. Nick Pope is expected to depart, although earlier interest from Ipswich has reportedly subsided. There is also a possibility that Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock could leave the club. While no offers have been made for these players, Newcastle would be open to their departures to facilitate a complete overhaul of the squad.
Should Pope, Murphy, and Willock all leave, Newcastle would need to find replacements for them. The club is also considering bringing in another midfielder, potentially in the event of Guimaraes’s departure. Additionally, if either Nick Woltemade or Yoane Wissa were to leave, the club might look for another striker, otherwise, they plan to proceed with their current three strikers for the upcoming season.

The Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) remains committed to Newcastle. The club’s focus on bringing in younger players who can be improved on the training ground is a key aspect of their strategy, with manager Eddie Howe seeing this as an opportunity to develop players like Sean Steur, Bazo Toure, and Manzambi. Steur, at 18, is considered a signing for the future and is expected to train with the first-team squad, with opportunities to work his way into the team.
