Manchester United closing in on Tielemans signing after Ederson pursuit ends

Tielemans set for medical as United pursue second summer deal
Manchester United are reportedly nearing the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans. This development follows United’s decision to withdraw from their pursuit of Atalanta’s Ederson. Reports indicate that United had a full agreement for Ederson but opted to step away due to a medical issue.
The focus has now shifted to Tielemans, with discussions between United, Villa, and the player said to be in an advanced stage. A transfer is considered very likely, with reports suggesting that United has activated a release clause in Tielemans’s contract, valued at £35 million. This clause means United does not need to engage in further negotiations with Villa to finalize the deal.
Villa reportedly attempted to retain Tielemans, even offering the midfielder a new contract. However, United’s activation of his release clause has positioned them to complete the signing. Tielemans is understood to be en route to Manchester to undergo routine medical examinations, which are expected to commence on Tuesday before he signs a long-term contract.
Midfield rebuild continues for United
United’s interest in rebuilding their midfield has been evident. The departure of Casemiro on a free transfer and a long-term knee ligament injury to Manuel Ugarte have left Kobbie Mainoo as the primary natural central midfielder in Michael Carrick’s squad. The club has already completed a deal to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea, but he was not expected to be the sole new addition to the midfield.
With Ederson no longer a target, United identified the need for another signing and have reportedly settled on Tielemans. His acquisition is seen as a strategic move, especially given his experience in English football. Tielemans has had several strong seasons with Villa and, including his time with Leicester City, is approaching 250 Premier League appearances. He has also played at the top end of the division for three of his eight seasons.
Tielemans’s current contract with Villa still has two years remaining, suggesting his market value is higher than his release clause. This makes the £35 million deal a potential bargain for United. This move could also alleviate pressure, as a nine-figure sum for a new midfielder would have brought significant expectations.
Tielemans’s career and international performance
Tielemans brings considerable experience to United’s squad, having accumulated 579 career appearances at club level. His signing is expected to add depth and quality following Casemiro’s departure. His performance in a recent tournament for Belgium further highlights his capabilities.
During the tournament, where Belgium was eliminated by Spain in the quarter-finals, Tielemans was among the team’s top performers. He scored twice in five appearances, with both goals coming against Senegal in the last-32. He also made an impression throughout the group stage and in the match against the United States in the last-16.
While Tielemans is considered an excellent addition, questions have been raised regarding his fit within Carrick’s tactical setup. Last season, Carrick typically deployed two deep midfielders, with Mainoo being one of them. Playing Mainoo and Tielemans together is feasible, but it might not provide elite defensive coverage, given Tielemans’s known weakness in agility.
Santos, being more defensive-minded, is still primarily a box-to-box player. This suggests that United might still be seeking a pure replacement for either Casemiro or Ugarte, assuming Ugarte’s potential departure. The completion of deals for Santos and Tielemans is significantly less expensive than other high-profile transfers, such as Manchester City’s acquisition of Elliot Anderson for £116 million. United were reportedly willing to spend a similar amount for an England international, indicating they might still have funds available for another target. Tielemans is expected to begin his medical examinations on Tuesday.
