Fernandes’ Debut Goal Secures Victory

Mateus Fernandes scored a notable goal within three minutes of his Tottenham debut, contributing to a 1-0 victory over League One side MK Dons in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Wednesday. The goal, described by Fernandes as his career best, came from a first-time volley into the top corner.

The midfielder, a recent acquisition from West Ham, connected with the ball from approximately 20 yards out after MK Dons goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray punched a corner clear. The shot found the net via the post, marking a strong start for Fernandes in his first appearance for the club.

Fernandes expressed confidence following the goal, stating he needs to continue shooting from outside the box. Former Spurs defender Sebastian Bassong praised the strike, drawing comparisons to goals by Gareth Bale and Zinedine Zidane, highlighting Fernandes’ balance, quality, and connection with the ball.

The match, held at Hotspur Way in Enfield, saw Tottenham control possession and territory. However, clear-cut chances were limited against MK Dons‘ 5-4-1 system. Despite this, Fernandes’ early goal proved sufficient to secure the win.

New Signings Feature Prominently

Alongside Fernandes, fellow new signing Sandro Tonali also made his first appearance for Tottenham. Tonali, who joined from Newcastle, partnered Fernandes in a midfield double pivot during the first half. Both players were substituted at half-time as manager Roberto de Zerbi made extensive changes to the squad.

Martin Dubravka, who arrived on a free transfer from Burnley in June, also debuted for Tottenham. Dubravka entered the game at half-time, replacing Antonin Kinsky in goal. He made a crucial save from close range, reacting quickly to push a header from six yards over the bar, thwarting an attack at the near post.

The match marked the return of several players, including Ben Davies, who had been out since January. Kota Takai and Manor Solomon also featured after loan spells last season. The game served as Tottenham’s pre-season opener, occurring exactly one month before their Premier League season is set to begin against Brentford.

The combined cost of Fernandes and Tonali’s transfers is reported to be £185m. Fernandes was signed for £85m, while Tonali’s transfer was valued at £100m. These significant investments follow a period where Tottenham’s fortunes have seen an upward swing, moving from a Premier League relegation battle to securing two record signings under manager De Zerbi.

Squad Changes and Upcoming Tour

De Zerbi implemented significant changes at half-time, substituting 10 of the 11 players. The second half saw a more youthful side take the field. Notable substitutions included Tye Hall for Archie Gray, Hardy for Kota Takai, and Byrne for Ben Davies.

In the attacking lineup, Richarlison replaced Dominic Solanke, and Scarlett came on for Mathys Tel. Mikey Moore, Luca Williams-Barnett, and Yang Min-Hyeok were also introduced. Despite further chances created in the second half, including a disallowed goal for offside by Richarlison and a blocked strike from Mikey Moore, the score remained 1-0.

MK Dons also made numerous changes throughout the second half, with players like Matete, Kazungu, Lewis-Burgess, Perniskie, Boateng, Wiles, Ekpiteta, Burke, Nelson, and Kelly entering the game. Their goalkeeper, MacGillivray, was replaced by Stacey in the 80th minute.

Following the friendly, Tottenham is scheduled to fly to New Zealand on Thursday for the first leg of their pre-season tour. They are set to play A-League side Auckland in a friendly at Eden Park on Sunday. The kick-off for this match is scheduled for 04:00 BST.
