Karim Adeyemi joins Barcelona, signs contract until 2031
FC Barcelona has announced the signing of forward Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund. The agreement sees Adeyemi join the Catalan club on a contract that extends until 2031. The transfer is reported to be worth up to 29 million euros.
Adeyemi, born in Munich on January 18, 2002, is expected to bring a versatile attacking profile to the Barça squad. He has demonstrated the ability to play across various attacking positions, including on either wing or as a central forward. His playing style is characterized by his pace and a powerful left foot.
Reunion with Hansi Flick
The move reunites Adeyemi with Hansi Flick, the current Barcelona coach. Flick previously handed Adeyemi his senior debut for the German national team almost five years ago. This prior working relationship played a significant role in Adeyemi’s decision to join Barcelona.
Adeyemi expressed that Flick was the primary reason for his transfer, stating that he had spoken with the coach from the outset. Flick reportedly explained his needs and expectations for Adeyemi within the team. Adeyemi confirmed his readiness to play wherever the coach deems most beneficial for the squad, emphasizing his willingness to contribute in any attacking role.
The forward recounted a conversation with Flick where the coach asked if he was ready to give his all, to which Adeyemi responded affirmatively. He views this as a unique opportunity, especially after a season he described as not his best. Flick’s support and belief were pivotal in convincing Adeyemi to make the move, with the coach reportedly telling him, “I want you, but I need you to give it all.”
Experience and Ambition at Barcelona
Before joining Barcelona, Adeyemi spent four seasons with Borussia Dortmund. During his time there, he established himself in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League. He has made 48 appearances in the Champions League, with 37 of those coming for Dortmund and 11 for his previous club, Red Bull Salzburg. Notably, he played against Barcelona twice in the last season’s Champions League competition.
Adeyemi’s professional career began after progressing through the youth ranks at Forstenried, Bayern Munich, and SpVgg Unterhaching before joining Red Bull Salzburg, his first professional club. He was formally presented at Barcelona on Thursday, marking the official start of this new chapter. He had visited the facilities the previous week to meet his new teammates, awaiting the formal completion of his contract before participating in full training sessions under Flick.
Speaking at his presentation, Adeyemi highlighted the high expectations associated with joining what he considers the best club in the world. He aims to demonstrate his capabilities to both the manager and the fans. He also identified the Champions League as a main objective, though not the only one, stating it was a significant reason for his move. He described joining Barcelona as a substantial step in his career, recognizing the club’s unique global stature.
Adeyemi was part of Germany‘s World Cup qualifying campaign but was not included in the final tournament squad. Following a summer period to recuperate and with the pre-season ahead, he is now officially a Blaugrana player. His idols at Barcelona include Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho, among others.
