Nigeria has maintained its 26th position in the global FIFA rankings, according to the latest update released after the July international window and the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final stage. Despite holding steady globally, the team has experienced a shift in its African standing, now occupying the fourth spot on the continent. This marks a drop from its previous position among Africa’s top three.
The Super Eagles, who are three-time African champions, did not participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team’s last official match was a 2-1 friendly loss against Portugal in June. Despite this, Nigeria continues to be recognized for possessing one of the continent’s strongest squads, with numerous players actively competing in prominent European leagues.

Morocco has solidified its status as the leading African football nation in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings. The Atlas Lions, who hosted the 2025 AFCON, are now ranked sixth globally. This places them comfortably ahead of other African nations and among the world’s elite teams. Senegal remains the second-highest ranked team in Africa, holding the 18th position globally. Egypt has moved up to become Africa’s third-best team, securing the 24th spot globally. The Democratic Republic of Congo holds the seventh position in Africa and 41st globally. The Leopards have shown improvement over time, becoming one of the continent’s most competitive teams, with many of their players featuring in top European divisions.
Cameroon, historically Africa’s most successful representative at the World Cup, is ranked eighth on the continent and 43rd globally. Despite recent inconsistent performances, the Indomitable Lions are still highly respected and continue to produce players capable of competing at the highest level.
Rounding out Africa’s top 10 are Mali and South Africa. Mali is ranked ninth in Africa and 53rd globally, following a period of steady progress. The West African nation has developed one of the continent’s strongest youth development systems, which has produced talented players excelling across Europe. South Africa completes the top 10, climbing to 54th in the global rankings. Benin remains at 20th in Africa and 93rd globally, having been swept aside by Togo during the last international break.
