Real Madrid has seen an initial bid of £85.4m for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande rejected. The offer included an initial fee of £76.9m with an additional £8.5m in add-ons. Reports indicate that the Spanish club is currently in negotiations with RB Leipzig to secure an agreement for the Ivory Coast international.
Despite the rejected offer, Real Madrid is understood to have agreed on personal terms with Diomande. The club has been active in the current transfer window, with new signings including Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, and Marc Cucurella following the return of Jose Mourinho.
The pursuit of Diomande comes amidst ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid. Discussions regarding the renewal of Vinicius Junior’s contract, which is set to expire in the summer of 2027, are reportedly stalling. This situation has led to speculation about potential tactical shifts for the club.
Interest from Multiple European Clubs
Liverpool has also expressed interest in Diomande, with a willingness to offer around £85m for the winger. This potential fee from Liverpool would reportedly surpass the Premier League’s record transfer for a teenager, which was £58.9m paid by Manchester United for Leny Yoro in the summer of 2024.
Beyond Real Madrid and Liverpool, other prominent European clubs are also reportedly interested in Diomande. These include Paris St-Germain, Arsenal, and Manchester City. Sources close to potential deals have described the situation as an open race, with six weeks remaining in the transfer window.
Earlier this summer, Diomande reportedly indicated a preference for a move to PSG and has already agreed to a contract with them until 2031. However, RB Leipzig is only prepared to sell the player for an exceptional fee. PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has engaged in talks with the German club regarding a potential transfer.
Diomande’s Rapid Ascent and Tactical Considerations
Diomande’s career has seen a rapid ascent. Just last year, his senior career consisted of half a dozen starts for Leganes as they faced relegation from LaLiga. During that period, he scored in two of those six matches, against Espanyol and Valladolid. His performances were enough to persuade RB Leipzig to acquire him for €20m, and he has since been described as a revelation in the Bundesliga.
His playing style is characterized as thrilling and difficult to defend, possessing qualities that are hard to coach. Diomande is described as a player who is constantly improving by incorporating coachable aspects into his game. The very biggest clubs are reportedly keen on him, while others may find him financially out of reach.
French journalist Walid Acherchour, speaking on the “After Foot” programme, questioned the potential deal for Diomande if it meant replacing players like Vinicius Junior or Michael Olise. He suggested that such a move might appear illogical to Real Madrid fans, especially given the significant sums involved for players who might not yet offer sufficient guarantees for the level expected at the Bernabeu.
German journalist Florian Plettenberg reported that Real Madrid has moved ahead of Paris Saint-Germain in the pursuit of Diomande, with recent direct contacts between the parties. While Diomande can play on the left, he is also adept on the right wing, a position Jose Mourinho reportedly prefers to have a pure winger for in his 4-2-3-1 formation. This tactical consideration suggests Diomande’s potential arrival could serve as an insurance policy if Vinicius Junior departs, or simply as an enhancement to the squad’s wing options, as he is considered more of a pure right-winger than other current squad members like Franco Mastantuono, Brahim Diaz, or Endrick. The transfer window still has six weeks remaining.
