Norris Dominates Hungarian Grand Prix Amidst Strategic Battles and Penalties
Lando Norris secured his first Grand Prix victory of the season at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He finished ahead of Max Verstappen, who took second place, and Kimi Antonelli, who came in third. Norris’s win marks a significant moment for McLaren this year.
The race featured a close contest for podium positions in the final laps between Verstappen and Antonelli. Antonelli’s third-place finish extended his championship lead by 50 points over Lewis Hamilton and 59 points over his teammate George Russell, who finished seventh after a challenging start.
Norris’s Victory and Team Strategy
Norris’s victory was influenced by a strategic decision that reportedly did not please his teammate, Oscar Piastri. Piastri initially led for a significant portion of the race after a strong start, taking advantage of Norris running wide through Turn Two. McLaren faced a dilemma with Piastri leading, as Norris appeared to have stronger pace.
Norris expressed frustration on the radio, requesting to pit first before the second round of pit stops, but his request was denied. McLaren instead pitted Piastri, citing a need to cover a threat from Hamilton. Norris was then allowed to run for several more laps before his pit stop for fresh tyres. Upon returning to the track, Norris emerged just ahead of Piastri, who had encountered a delay due to contact with Williams driver Carlos Sainz while being lapped. Sainz received a five-second penalty for the incident.
Norris’s pace after his pit stop justified the team’s decision, allowing him to establish a comfortable lead. Piastri later retired from the race due to a gearbox issue. This incident led to a late virtual safety car, which intensified the battles behind Norris, though he remained unchallenged.
Norris commented on his performance, stating that his pace was “probably some of the best pace I’ve ever had” and that the car was “beautiful to drive.” He added that he felt “very confident” during the race.
Verstappen’s Comeback and Hamilton’s Penalties
Verstappen secured second place despite expressing dissatisfaction with his car throughout much of the race. Red Bull implemented a strategic move by fitting soft tyres to his car during his second pit stop, aiming to challenge Hamilton in the later stages. The retirement of Piastri triggered a virtual safety car, prompting a late round of pit stops for some teams, including Ferrari, who brought in both their drivers.
Hamilton briefly passed Antonelli after coming out of the pits, but was required to return the position. Antonelli and Hamilton then pursued Verstappen, but were delayed while lapping Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto. Ultimately, Verstappen maintained his position, finishing 3.6 seconds ahead of Antonelli.
Hamilton faced penalties during the event. He received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane during the race. This followed a three-place grid penalty issued after qualifying for impeding Piastri. Hamilton had initially qualified in second place but was relegated to fifth on the grid due to this infringement. The stewards determined that Hamilton unnecessarily impeded Piastri during qualifying, forcing the Australian to abort his lap.

Aston Martin drivers Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso finished in 13th and 14th positions respectively. Alonso was able to compete with other cars, running a long first stint on soft tyres before switching to mediums. An engine upgrade is anticipated for the Dutch Grand Prix.
