Liverpool defeat Sunderland 4-2 in Iraola’s coaching debut
Iraola’s winning start and early goal
Andoni Iraola secured a victory in his inaugural match as head coach for Liverpool, as the team defeated Sunderland 4-2 during their opening fixture of the US summer tour. The match, held in Nashville, saw Liverpool overcome a deficit with a strong second-half performance. Iraola, who took over from Arne Slot in June, expressed satisfaction with aspects of the team’s play, particularly a well-executed team move that led to the first goal.
The first goal of the Iraola era came in the 13th minute, scored by young midfielder Kieran Morrison. The goal was the culmination of impressive build-up play involving McConnell, Ngumoha, and Elliott, who fed Morrison in space on the right side of the box. Morrison then found the bottom corner of the net with a low shot. This marked Morrison’s first senior goal for the club, a moment he described as a “big moment” and a source of pride, especially under the new manager.
Morrison highlighted the influence of Iraola’s new philosophy, noting that the coach has introduced varied and different playing styles. He mentioned that Iraola has taught him things he had never heard before, crediting the coach for his impact. Morrison also spoke about his ambitions for the season, aiming to play as many minutes as possible and help the team, including scoring at Anfield. He reflected on his previous season, where he was often on the bench and felt he could contribute more.
Match progression and key goals
Despite Liverpool taking an early lead, Sunderland quickly equalized in the 28th minute after McConnell lost possession deep in their own half. This allowed Le Fee to break forward, and he fired an effort past Mamardashvili from 25 yards. Sunderland then took the lead early in the second half, with Tuterov scoring after Frimpong lost possession in a critical area, allowing the ball to be slipped through for the half-time substitute to finish.
Liverpool, however, mounted a comeback. In the 56th minute, Dominik Szoboszlai leveled the score with a powerful volley from the left edge of the box. This goal followed an excellent break down the left side involving Koumas and Kerkez. Szoboszlai‘s performance was notable, as he produced a dazzling second-half display and took the armband after being introduced at halftime. He had recently committed his future to the club by signing a five-year contract.
The Reds took the lead in the 72nd minute when Ramsey set up substitute Federico Chiesa, who scored from a tight angle despite the onrushing Moore. Liverpool then sealed their victory in the 85th minute, with Szoboszlai assisting Lewis Koumas, who finished confidently after Sunderland gave away possession. This goal wrapped up the game for Liverpool, securing a 4-2 win.
Injury concerns and squad depth
A significant concern for Iraola was the early injury to stand-in captain and long-serving defender Joe Gomez. Gomez was forced off with what appeared to be a muscle issue just eight minutes into the match. He was replaced by youngster Ifeanyi Ndukwe. Iraola described Gomez’s injury as “the worst news,” especially as the team had gone through training without losing any players. Gomez, 29, has a history of injuries at Anfield, and the extent of this latest issue is yet to be determined.
The injury to Gomez highlighted Liverpool‘s defensive situation. With captain Virgil van Dijk on holiday after the World Cup, Giovanni Leoni recovering from an ACL injury, and new signing Jeremy Jacquet sidelined with a shoulder issue, Iraola’s options at centre-back were limited. Ndukwe, an 18-year-old, formed a defensive partnership with fellow 18-year-old Mor Talla Ndiaye. Ndukwe, signed from Austria Vienna for £2.5 million, will be sent out on loan as he does not meet the work permit requirements for the UK this season.
Despite the injury setback, Iraola used 22 players during the match, providing opportunities for several young talents. Besides Morrison and Koumas, James McConnell and Trey Nyoni also impressed. McConnell, 21, performed well in midfield during the first half, while Nyoni, 19, took on a similar role in the second half, providing a shield for the defense and maintaining Liverpool‘s attacking momentum. The team’s next fixture is against Wrexham in New York on July 30.
