Rodri, the Manchester City midfielder, has been a central figure in Spain‘s recent football successes, including their World Cup victory. His performances have led to significant acclaim, with Spain coach De La Fuente praising his impact on the team.
De La Fuente highlighted Rodri’s importance, stating that questioning the midfielder’s abilities was an “insult to football intelligence.” He further described Rodri as the “best player in the world in his position.” The coach also mentioned Martin Zubimendi, referring to him as “surely the second best in the world” in the same role. Zubimendi played in all 38 games for Arsenal in his debut Premier League season, scoring five goals as the team secured a title.

Rodri’s trophy collection has expanded significantly, now including the World Cup, a Ballon d’Or, a European title, a Nations League, four Premier League trophies, and a Champions League. During Spain’s World Cup campaign in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Rodri completed 756 passes, marking the most in a single edition of the tournament since 1966. He participated in all eight matches for Spain, leading in touches with 910, passes in the opposition half with 428, and line-breaking passes with 122, including 76 in the final third.
In the World Cup final, Rodri completed 101 passes. This places him among only three instances on record since 1966 where a player completed over 100 passes in a World Cup final, with Brazil‘s Dunga achieving 130 in 1994 and Pau Cubarsi completing 121 in the same year’s edition.
Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague described Rodri’s performance as “absolutely outstanding,” noting his extensive running and ability to deliver passes that bypass defenders. Balague asserted that Rodri is currently at a “Ballon d’Or level” and that the team is “Rodri’s team.”
Contract Situation and Future
Despite his recent successes, Rodri’s future at Manchester City remains uncertain, with only one year left on his contract. Real Madrid is reportedly interested in the midfielder, with returning manager Jose Mourinho said to be keen on his composure, defensive skills, and ball control. New City boss Enzo Maresca is unlikely to want to part with Rodri, but his contract situation has created a degree of uncertainty.
Rodri’s journey to his current form followed a significant injury. He ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in 2024, after Spain’s Euros triumph. This injury caused him to miss the remainder of that season and feature sporadically in the subsequent campaign, making 33 appearances across all competitions for City. Former City boss Pep Guardiola had predicted in October that Rodri would not return to his best form until the World Cup.
Rodri reflected on his recovery, stating that it takes a year to regain peak fitness after such an injury and another year to feel like oneself again as a player. He emphasized the importance of patience, belief, and confidence during the recovery process. A conversation with Guardiola, where Rodri expressed the need to rest to prepare for the World Cup, was a turning point in his recovery. Rodri stated, “To get where I am today in my current form, I had to be clever.”
Spain’s World Cup victory was their second major title under De La Fuente, who also guided them to Euro 2024 glory, where they defeated England in the final in Berlin with a late goal from Mikel Oyarzabal.
