Stones Becomes Free Agent After World Cup Display
Juventus has reportedly joined the competition to sign England international John Stones, who recently became a free agent. Stones’ contract with Manchester City expired, making him available for a free transfer. His performances for the England national team during the recent World Cup are said to have significantly increased his appeal to clubs seeking to bolster their defensive lines.
Despite making limited appearances for Manchester City last season, Stones’ standing in the football world reportedly rose due to his strong performances with the Three Lions at the World Cup. He featured in five internationals with England during this year’s tournament.
Stones, at 32, concluded a ten-year spell with Manchester City. During his time with the club, he secured six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups, and the Champions League.
Interest from Top European Clubs
Following his departure from Manchester City, Stones has attracted interest from several major clubs across Europe. According to one report, he has engaged in discussions with Juventus regarding a potential move abroad.
Other prominent clubs linked with the versatile defender include Arsenal, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and his former club, Everton. However, transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio indicates that Juventus is the only club that has made direct contact with Stones’ representatives.
Juventus is actively seeking defensive reinforcements as they aim to compete strongly in the upcoming season. The Turin side finished sixth last season, missing out on the Champions League and qualifying for the Europa League instead.
Chelsea’s Defensive Strategy and Gallas’s Recommendation
Chelsea has been making efforts to strengthen their backline this summer. While they have focused on securing the signature of Maxence Lacroix, reports suggest they also hold an interest in Stones. The club’s recruitment strategy this summer reportedly balances a youth-centric approach with the acquisition of experienced talent.
Former Blues defender William Gallas has publicly urged Chelsea to sign Stones, describing him as the ‘best option’ available in the market. Gallas highlighted Stones’ experience and his track record of winning major trophies, including the Premier League and the Champions League.
Gallas emphasized that acquiring Stones would not involve a significant transfer fee since he is a free agent. He believes Stones’ experience would be beneficial for Chelsea’s younger defenders, such as Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, and Wesley Fofana, allowing them to develop without bearing undue pressure.
The former defender suggested that an experienced player like Stones could teach younger players and help them improve, taking pressure off their shoulders. He noted that some of Chelsea’s young defenders made mistakes when they were not yet ready, playing at a very young age with too much pressure.
It remains uncertain whether Chelsea will formally approach Stones, but he is reportedly on the radar of Xabi Alonso, who is looking to bolster the team’s defense. The Crystal Palace defender, Maxence Lacroix, is reportedly set to become Chelsea’s third signing of the transfer window, following the arrivals of Marco Palestra and Morgan Rogers.
Chelsea recently launched their new away kit for the 2026/27 season, which is said to celebrate the club’s ‘Italian Renaissance’ with a black base and gold trim.
