Starlink Resumes Major Price Restructuring In Nigeria After Regulatory Reset

LAGOS – Starlink at the end of 2024 announced plans to implement a revised pricing structure.

This move follows an earlier attempt to adjust tariffs on October 1, 2024, which faced significant backlash and regulatory scrutiny from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The NCC had raised concerns over Starlink’s unilateral decision to increase subscription fees without prior regulatory approval.

Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, noted that the October 2024 adjustment violated established protocols, prompting Starlink to suspend the changes temporarily.

The new monthly tariff structure under the revised pricing models are: Residential subscription which increased from N38,000 to N75,000.

Mobile regional plan (Roam Unlimited) that was raised from N49,000 to N167,000 per month.

Mobile Global Roaming Service which is now priced at N717,000 monthly.

The revised tariffs mirror those proposed in the October 2024 announcement and follow proper regulatory channels, addressing concerns raised by NCC regarding unauthorised price modifications.

The structured implementation allows immediate application for new subscribers while giving existing customers a transition period until their next billing cycle.

Starlink cites Nigeria’s inflation rates as the primary driver behind these adjustments.

In addition, this price adjustment aligns with the NCC’s reported plans to approve new pricing frameworks for telecommunications operators, addressing long-standing tariff disputes.

The price restructuring could signal a broader industry shift as service providers adapt to increasing operational costs in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

This development may influence how other providers approach their pricing strategies in the market.
