2026 FA Community Shield: Arsenal vs Manchester City
The 2026 FA Community Shield between Arsenal and Manchester City will be held at Wales’ Principality Stadium on Sunday, August 16. This marks the first time since 2006 that the annual fixture will take place at this venue. The decision to move the match from its traditional home at Wembley Stadium is due to scheduling conflicts.
The Principality Stadium, which has a capacity of 73,931, previously hosted the Community Shield, FA Cup final, and EFL Cup final between 2001 and 2007 while Wembley Stadium was undergoing demolition and reconstruction. Following its reopening in 2007, the new Wembley hosted its first FA Cup final in the same year. Arsenal has won two Community Shields at the Principality Stadium when it was known as the Millennium Stadium.
Venue Change Details
The primary reason for the relocation of the 2026 Community Shield is the unavailability of Wembley Stadium. Canadian pop artist The Weeknd has booked the stadium for five nights, from August 14 to 19, for his ‘After Hours til Dawn’ tour. This concert series coincides with the rescheduled date for the Community Shield.
The start of the next Premier League season has been delayed by one week, partly due to an extended 2026 World Cup. This alteration to the 2026-27 football calendar means Wembley Stadium is unavailable on Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16, due to these pre-planned concerts. The Football Association confirmed that the Premier League will now begin on the weekend of Saturday, August 22.
The Community Shield has been played outside of London on other occasions since Wembley’s reopening. In 2012, Villa Park hosted the match between Manchester City and Chelsea because Wembley was being used for football events during the Olympics. Additionally, in 2022, the annual match was played at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium, where Manchester City faced Liverpool, because Wembley hosted the Women’s European Championship final.
Historically, various venues have hosted the fixture, formerly known as the Charity Shield. These include Stamford Bridge, Highbury, White Hart Lane, Old Trafford, Maine Road, The Den, Molineux, and Filbert Street.
Match Officials and Teams
The match officials for the 2026 FA Community Shield have been appointed. Sam Barrott from the West Riding FA will serve as the referee, leading the teams out in Cardiff. He will be assisted by Craig Taylor (Staffordshire FA) and Blake Antrobus (Manchester FA).
Farai Hallam (Surrey FA) has been named as the fourth official, with Alistair Nelson (Nottinghamshire FA) as the reserve assistant referee. VAR will be in use for the game, with James Bell (Sheffield & Hallamshire FA) as the VAR and Tim Wood (Gloucestershire FA) as the AVAR. Barrott recently officiated at the UEFA U19 EURO Finals this summer.
Manchester City, the Emirates FA Cup winners, will be under the charge of new head coach Enzo Maresca following the departure of Pep Guardiola at the end of the season. They will be aiming for their first Shield victory since 2024, having not participated in last year’s edition. Arsenal, the Premier League champions, are making their first appearance in the Shield since 2023, when they defeated City on penalties after a 0-0 draw at Wembley. The kick-off is scheduled for 3pm BST on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
