Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez stated that the team represented their nation in the “best possible way” during the World Cup, despite contentious moments during and after their final loss to Spain. His initial booking was for dissent towards referee Slavko Vincic, and he was later sent off for a challenge on Pau Cubarsi.
In a social media statement, the Chelsea midfielder did not mention his red card. He reflected that “there is something much bigger than just a result,” adding that the group consistently represented the team effectively. Reports indicate that Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were involved in these clashes. Paredes was seen pushing Spain’s Eric Garcia, while Thiago Almada forced Spain’s Gavi to the ground. Ayala reportedly held Garcia around the throat and appeared to strike Spain midfielder Dani Olmo. Argentina players also reportedly turned their backs on Spain during the medal and trophy presentation.
Managerial and Player Futures Under Scrutiny
Beyond the on-field incidents, questions have arisen regarding events prior to kick-off. Speculation on social media suggests discussions in the Argentina dressing room before the game, including whether Lionel Messi indicated that the final would be his last match for the national team. Unverified footage posted by RLC Noticias showed Messi encouraging his teammates to remain calm before the match, urging them to “forget everything else” and concentrate on playing.
Former England internationals criticised the actions of the Argentina players. Alan Shearer described Paredes’ actions as unacceptable, stating there is “no place or space for that.” Joe Hart called the behaviour “disgusting.” Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni addressed the situation in his post-match interview, stating, “We are gracious in victory, and we must be gracious in defeat.” He added that the team accepts the loss and will not forget their journey to the final.
Argentina, who won the World Cup in 1978, 1986, and 2022, had an impressive run in North America, winning their first seven matches against teams including Algeria, Austria, Jordan, Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland, and England before their loss to Spain. In the semi-final against England, Argentina came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory with goals from Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez.
Several media outlets in Argentina have suggested that the final could mark the end of an era, with speculation that it might be Scaloni’s last match in charge and that Lionel Messi is unlikely to participate in another World Cup. Messi expressed his pain on social media, stating, “The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal.”
Despite the defeat, thousands of Argentina fans greeted the team with an open-top bus parade through Buenos Aires. Scaloni and 16 of his 26 players returned to the country, where they were welcomed at Ezeiza International Airport. Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who made 11 saves during the final, was among the returning players, but Messi did not make the trip, instead returning to Miami to join Inter Miami.
Emiliano Martinez is currently considering his international future following the final. The goalkeeper, who won the World Cup four years prior, shared on Instagram his disappointment at not winning again and stated, “Now I have to reflect on many things, see how to move forward, and decide if it’s time to step aside.”
