Phil Foden signs new four-year contract with Manchester City
Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has agreed to a new four-year contract, extending his commitment to the club until 2030. The 26-year-old’s previous deal was set to conclude next summer, but he has chosen to remain at the Etihad Stadium under the guidance of new head coach Enzo Maresca.
Foden expressed his enthusiasm for the new deal, stating that committing his future to City means everything to him. He highlighted that playing for the club has always been his aspiration and wearing the shirt remains an honour. He also acknowledged his fortune in being part of a historic period marked by numerous titles, while emphasizing the club’s continuous pursuit of more achievements.
The midfielder also shared his anticipation of working again with Maresca, who served as an assistant to former manager Pep Guardiola during City’s Treble-winning 2022-23 season. Foden described Maresca as brilliant during that period, someone respected and admired by all the players.
Career at Manchester City
Foden received his first-team debut from Guardiola as a 17-year-old in November 2017. Since then, he has accumulated 369 appearances for City, scoring 110 goals. His contributions have been instrumental in the club securing 20 major trophies, making him one of the most decorated players in City’s history, alongside John Stones and Bernardo Silva.
His trophy haul includes six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, three FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup. Foden’s journey with the club began at the age of nine in their academy, making him a lifelong Manchester City fan.
Individually, Foden has also received significant accolades. He was named the PFA Players’ Player of the Year for 2023-24, the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, and the Premier League Player of the Season. In May 2026, he became the sixth player to achieve 100 goal contributions in the Premier League for Manchester City and is among 20 players to have scored 100 goals for the club.
Recent Performance and Future Outlook
Despite his achievements, Foden’s output has seen fluctuations in recent seasons. After the Treble-winning season, he recorded a career-high of 27 goals and 12 assists. However, the subsequent two campaigns were less productive, partly due to a change in his role within the team.
Last season, Foden scored seven goals and provided five assists in 33 Premier League games. The previous campaign saw him score seven goals and assist twice in 28 top-flight matches. His omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad in May followed an inconsistent season where he made only 23 Premier League starts. The Professional Footballers’ Association suggested that Foden had been affected by football’s demanding schedule, noting he had not been the same player as two years prior.
With the departure of Guardiola, who ended his 10-year tenure in May, and the transfer of Bernardo Silva this summer, Foden’s new contract positions him as a key figure for the club’s future. Maresca’s return is seen as an opportunity to help Foden reach his peak years, given their positive working relationship during the Treble season. Foden played 50 times in 2025-26, scoring 10 goals and providing seven assists.
Foden expressed his excitement for the next phase of his career, acknowledging his personal improvement through working with the club’s coaches and world-class squad, especially with many legends from his early career moving on.
