Wildfire smoke crisis: How canceled games and air quality concerns could impact the World Cup Final

Air quality impacts sporting events

A Major League Soccer (MLS) match between Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecaps at Soldier Field was postponed due to poor air quality in Chicago. The conditions were attributed to wildfire smoke originating from Canada, which has caused air quality levels to reach unhealthy to hazardous categories in parts of the Great Lakes region and the East Coast. Officials in several cities have advised residents to stay indoors or wear masks when outside.

The postponement of the Chicago Fire versus Vancouver Whitecaps game meant a delay for Robert Lewandowski’s anticipated MLS debut. The match, which was expected to draw a significant crowd, has been rescheduled for October 6. This decision was made with the health and safety of fans, players, and staff as a primary concern, following consultations with local health experts, Major League Soccer, and the City of Chicago.

In addition to the MLS fixture, an MLB game between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies saw its start time adjusted due to similar air quality issues. The first pitch was moved to 6:10 p.m. ET from its original 7:10 p.m. slot. This marks the second time wildfire smoke has affected a game in Philadelphia, with a previous postponement occurring in June 2023 for a match between the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies.

Athlete concerns over playing conditions

The challenging air quality conditions have also affected athletes in women’s soccer. Trinity Rodman, a member of the United States women’s national team, commented on the difficult circumstances during an NWSL match between Washington Spirit and Gotham FC at Citi Field. Rodman noted the frequent hydration breaks required during the game due to high temperatures and poor air quality.

Rodman expressed her opinion that if hydration breaks are needed every 15 minutes, the game should not proceed. Despite the significance of the event, which set a record for the largest crowd at a women’s sporting event in New York City with over 42,000 attendees, she questioned the decision to continue playing under such conditions. The smoke-filled skies presented a difficult situation for all involved.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency declared an Air Pollution Action Day for Chicago and Northern Illinois, recommending that individuals limit prolonged outdoor activity and take more frequent breaks. Wind patterns have been pushing smoke from more than 800 wildfires in Canada southward, contributing to the widespread air quality issues.

Rescheduled matches and future implications

The postponed Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecaps match, along with a scheduled post-game concert, will now take place on October 6. Tickets purchased for the original date will remain valid for the rescheduled fixture. The club acknowledged the disappointment among fans, especially given the excitement surrounding the return to play after the FIFA World Cup break and the anticipation of Lewandowski’s home debut.

The timing of these postponements is notable for MLS, as the league aims to capture global soccer attention following the World Cup. The league had scheduled several marquee games after the World Cup semifinals but before the final. Other MLS matches scheduled for Thursday included CF Montréal versus Toronto FC, St. Louis City versus Sporting Kansas City, and Seattle Sounders versus Portland Timbers.
