Bruno Fernandes reflects on Portugal’s World Cup exit after Spain defeat

Bruno Fernandes 'sad, frustrated and disillusioned' as Man Utd ace reflects on Portugal's World Cup heartbreak

Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes expressed his disappointment following the team’s elimination from the World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Spain. The loss meant Portugal exited the tournament before the quarter-finals, falling short of their stated objective to win the competition.

Fernandes, along with fellow Manchester United player Diogo Dalot, started the last-16 match in Dallas. However, Spain secured their progression with a 91st-minute goal from Mikel Merino.

Following the match, Fernandes admitted that Portugal had not achieved enough. He stated, “I do not think we were successful. We should at least have gone a bit further.” He described the moment as disappointing, reiterating that the team’s clear objective was to win the World Cup.

Reflecting on the match

Fernandes analysed Portugal‘s performance, noting a shift in control during the game. He remarked, “I think we were superior in the first half, but in the second half we made the same mistake of dropping too deep and giving too much possession to our opponents.” He added that when a team does this, conceding a goal becomes inevitable.

He acknowledged Spain as a high-quality team with great players. Fernandes believed that if Portugal had maintained their first-half performance, the outcome might have been different. “We lost to one of the title contenders, one of the favourites,” he concluded.

Rúben Dias, a defender for Portugal, also commented on the tight nature of the game against Spain, describing it as one of the closest encounters since he joined the national team. He felt Portugal had chances in the evenly contested match, with the only missing element being a goal. Dias noted that Spain scored at a crucial moment, and while both teams were considered lethal, Portugal failed to score.

Dias further stated that the team was aware of their growth and improvement throughout the tournament. He expressed a feeling that they could have progressed further and emphasised the need to look to the future.

Nélson Semedo, another Portugal defender, congratulated his teammates for their effort despite the elimination. He acknowledged that Portugal was knocked out by a strong team, considered contenders to win the World Cup. Semedo felt the team went “toe to toe” with Spain and had their opportunities in a very even game.

Coaches and captains react

Roberto Martínez, Portugal‘s coach, described the game as very even, similar to the Nations League final, and felt his team deserved extra time. He acknowledged the role of luck in football, citing the ball hitting the bar. Martínez expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating they played Spain “eye to eye” with intensity and shut down their usual play.

Martínez also confirmed that the match was his last as Portugal coach. He stated his aim was to win the World Cup, and since that was not achieved, continuing made no sense. He thanked the Portuguese people for what he described as an incredible journey and an honour, mentioning that he would carry memories of the fans’ passion and energy. He also highlighted setting records in Portugal‘s history across 45 matches and winning the Nations League.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal‘s captain, expressed sadness at being out of the World Cup, but maintained a clear conscience, stating he gave his all. He confirmed it was his last World Cup but did not decide on his future with the national team in the heat of the moment, wanting to avoid distracting from the team’s World Cup performance. Ronaldo described the elimination from a major competition as sad, but felt the team was improving and played a good game. He found the exit frustrating but reiterated his clear conscience.

Ronaldo also praised Martínez, stating he loved working with him, calling him a great coach and human being, and commending his contributions to Portugal.

Looking ahead for Manchester United players

For Manchester United, the early exit of Fernandes and Dalot means two senior players will return from the tournament sooner than anticipated. Fernandes is considered one of the club’s key figures, while Dalot has become a reliable option in both full-back positions. Their return provides Manchester United with a clearer timeline for their pre-season preparations.

Fernandes’ comments were seen as honest rather than overly dramatic, reflecting the high expectations Portugal had entering the tournament. The focus for Manchester United now shifts to the recovery of these players, who will need time to reset after their international exit.

Fernandes believes that Portugal, despite never having won the World Cup and always having high expectations, possessed the quality to win the tournament this time. He emphasised the need for the team to “be ourselves more, look more at what we can do, try and play our own way, and find ways to make teams respect us more.”

Semedo also suggested that while Portugal has a great team with a lot of quality, they perhaps could have performed better. He stressed the importance of self-criticism in analysing their World Cup performance and looking ahead, as “life goes on.”
