Benjamin Fredrick promoted to Brentford first team, signs new four-year contract

Nigeria international Benjamin Fredrick has been promoted to Brentford’s first-team squad and has signed a new four-year contract, with an option for an additional year. The 21-year-old defender joined Keith Andrews’ squad for pre-season preparations.
Andrews expressed satisfaction with Fredrick’s new deal, highlighting the club’s belief in his potential. He noted Fredrick’s prior experience in senior international football and his significant role in Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign. The head coach also mentioned Fredrick’s productive loan spell in Belgium, which was cut short due to injury.
The immediate focus for Fredrick is to consistently integrate into the squad, as his last game was in November, indicating a lengthy period sidelined by injury. Andrews emphasised the need for Fredrick to challenge his teammates and demonstrate his abilities within the first-team environment.
Fredrick, a product of Simoiben Football Academy in Kaduna, played for Abubakar Bukola Saraki FC and Nasarawa United in Nigeria’s top flight. He joined Brentford B on loan in August 2023, where he impressed under Neil MacFarlane. During his initial season, he was named on the bench for two Premier League games and two FA Cup ties before his move was made permanent in April 2024.
In the 2024/25 season, Fredrick continued to excel, featuring in two more Premier League matchday squads. He played a crucial role in the young Bees’ journey to the Premier League Cup final and their victory in the Under-21 Professional Development League national title. In May 2025, he was named Brentford B Players’ Player of the Year.
Later in May 2025, Fredrick made his senior international debut for Nigeria in a penalty shoot-out victory against Jamaica in the Unity Cup final at Gtech Community Stadium. He then went on loan to FCV Dender for the 2025/26 campaign, making 15 appearances across the Belgian Pro League and Croky Cup before a knee injury ended his loan spell prematurely.
During the September, October, and November international breaks, Fredrick started Nigeria’s final four matches of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group. He also started their win against Gabon in the African play-off semi-final, though Nigeria was later defeated by DR Congo in the final following a penalty shoot-out.
Sam Saunders, the B team head coach, praised Fredrick’s progression since joining the B team, highlighting his character, coachability, and outstanding attributes in one-v-one defending. Saunders expressed excitement about Fredrick’s future, noting his proven ability at the international level.
Fredrick shared his thoughts on the new contract and promotion, expressing happiness and pride. He acknowledged the club’s support and specifically praised former B-team head coach Neil MacFarlane, now assistant first-team coach, for his guidance and encouragement during his development. Fredrick noted that MacFarlane helped him grow as both a player and a person since his initial move to the west London club in August 2023.
Looking ahead, Fredrick stated his ambition to continue pushing and learning daily. His primary aim is to make his debut with the first team, secure Premier League minutes, and perform to his best when opportunities arise.

Fredrick’s Journey to the First Team
Fredrick’s path to the first team began with his loan move to Brentford B in August 2023. His performances quickly caught attention, leading to his permanent transfer in April 2024. He was recognised for his contributions with the Brentford B Players’ Player of the Year award in May 2025.
His development included significant international exposure, making his senior debut for Nigeria and participating in crucial World Cup qualifiers. Despite a knee injury interrupting his loan spell with FCV Dender, his consistent progress has led to this promotion.
Coaching Perspectives and Player Ambitions
Head coach Keith Andrews emphasised the importance of Fredrick regaining full fitness and integrating into the senior squad. He sees significant potential in the young defender, who has already demonstrated his capabilities on the international stage.
Sam Saunders lauded Fredrick’s character and defensive skills, noting his continuous improvement. Fredrick himself expressed gratitude for the club’s support and his ambition to make his Premier League debut and contribute to the first team.
