Mikel Merino’s late goals propel Spain into World Cup semi-finals

Merino’s decisive World Cup impact
Mikel Merino, the Arsenal midfielder, has emerged as a key player for Spain at the World Cup, scoring decisive goals in successive knockout matches. His contributions have helped Spain advance to the semi-finals of the tournament. In the quarter-final against Belgium, Merino scored in the 88th minute, just 117 seconds after entering the game as a substitute. This followed a late winner he scored as a substitute against Portugal in the previous round.
Merino is the first player in World Cup history to score winning goals in separate knockout ties after coming off the bench. Across these two matches, he played a total of nine minutes plus stoppage time. His goal against Portugal eliminated Cristiano Ronaldo’s team from the tournament. Four days later, he capitalised on an error by Senne Lammens to secure Spain’s 2-1 victory over Belgium.
Despite starting only one game in the tournament, the 30-year-old has been instrumental in Spain’s progression. His ability to deliver crucial goals in significant moments has been a hallmark of his performance. Spain’s victory against Belgium marks only the second time the national team has reached the last four of the tournament, with their previous semi-final appearance in 2010 leading to a trophy win.
Overcoming injury and proving his worth
Merino’s participation in the World Cup was uncertain earlier in the year due to a stress fracture in his foot sustained while playing for Arsenal in January. This injury left him unable to walk for two months, requiring a mobility scooter for movement. He returned to training in May, and his rapid recovery underscored his work ethic and character.
Speaking about his injury, Merino noted he had two choices: to succumb to the setback or to maintain a positive outlook and use the time to enhance other aspects of his game. His impact on the pitch since his return highlights his capacity to score important goals. Luis de la Fuente, Spain’s coach, who has worked with Merino since his youth team days, expressed strong confidence in the player, describing him as a “safe bet” who “never disappoints.”
Merino’s knack for decisive goals is also familiar to Arsenal fans. All but one of his 11 Premier League goals for the club have either equalised or put his team ahead. He has scored against teams such as Liverpool, Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Newcastle for Arsenal, demonstrating his ability to perform in high-stakes matches. His versatility has seen him evolve from a midfielder to a centre-forward at Arsenal following his transfer from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2024.

Looking ahead to the semi-finals
Spain’s next challenge is a semi-final encounter against France. This match will feature a notable contest between Kylian Mbappe of France and Spain’s Lamine Yamal. While Mbappe has been a prominent figure in the tournament, Yamal, a teenage star from Barcelona, has yet to fully replicate his form from Spain’s successful Euro 2024 campaign.
Yamal has played six games in this World Cup and scored one goal. Although his goal and assist count may not be high, his dribbling and pace are noted for creating space for teammates like Merino. Former England striker Wayne Rooney commented on Yamal’s ability to attract defenders and open up play for others. Spain’s defence has been robust, conceding only one goal in the tournament, but they face a significant test against France’s potent attack.
Former Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta noted that while the attacking players’ fluidity and decision-making could improve, Spain’s ability to control the game and quickly recover possession is a strength. He also suggested that Yamal has more to offer the team, particularly in creating differences in key moments. Spain will need their attacking players, including Yamal, to perform at their best to alleviate pressure on their defence against France.
