Aston Villa has initiated discussions to acquire Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea. The proposed deal involves a potential loan, though Chelsea is reportedly seeking a permanent element to be included in any agreement for the winger. Reports indicate that Chelsea is prepared to sell Garnacho during the current transfer window. This move comes as Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, acknowledged that the club is working with the player and his representatives to find a suitable resolution.
Garnacho has not yet rejoined pre-season training as he awaits a decision on his future. AS Roma has also expressed interest in signing Garnacho, and the former Manchester United winger is said to have admirers in the Saudi Pro League.
This potential transfer follows a significant deal between the two clubs, where Chelsea agreed to a British record transfer fee of £117 million for Morgan Rogers, who is moving from Villa to Stamford Bridge. This illustrates a complex transfer dynamic connecting the two Premier League sides.
Garnacho’s Chelsea Stint and Past
Life in west London has reportedly been challenging for Garnacho since his £40 million move from Manchester United last September. During his single season at Chelsea, he registered eight goals and four assists across 43 appearances in all competitions. However, his league performance was less impactful, with just 1217 Premier League minutes across 25 appearances, averaging less than 49 minutes per game.
This playing time is less than what Rogers (1528 minutes) and Emiliano Buendia (1527 minutes) managed in the same position for Villa last season. Garnacho’s five goal involvements meant he averaged one every 243 minutes, compared to Rogers’ record of a goal involvement every 90 minutes and Buendia’s every 190 minutes. His tendency to hug the touchline and stay wide could require a tactical adjustment in Unai Emery’s system if he joins Villa.
Garnacho’s transfer to Chelsea originally followed a disagreement at Old Trafford with manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach was reportedly direct about the youngster’s future in Manchester, leading to a public confrontation. Chelsea, as Club World Cup champions, has demonstrated a strong ability to sell players. The club has already secured enough outgoing transfers this summer to cover the £117 million cost of Rogers, raising approximately from sales of players such as Marc Cucurella, Andrey Santos, and Tyrique George. Compensation from Manchester City for Maresca also contributed to these funds.
While players like Reece James, Palmer, and Joao Pedro are considered untouchable assets, other first-team squad members are expected to depart for substantial fees. Garnacho, Nicolas Jackson, and Trevoh Chalobah could collectively bring in another significant sum if they are sold. Malo Gusto also faces an uncertain future, with Chelsea valuing him at a significant sum, and defenders Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi are also expected to leave.
Despite not participating in European competitions this season, Chelsea remains subject to UEFA’s stricter financial regulations. Last summer, the club entered a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA for breaching regulations and aims to demonstrate progress in financial sustainability this window. Chelsea generated around from player sales last summer, and with the need to offload several defenders and at least one striker, this summer could see another significant period of trading. If the deal is finalized, Garnacho would be the fourth major arrival for Unai Emery’s side this summer, joining Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Modou Kaba Cisse.
