Morgan Rogers signs for Chelsea in record-breaking deal
Chelsea has confirmed the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old forward has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033 and will join Xabi Alonso’s squad for the upcoming 2026/27 season. The transfer fee for Rogers is reported to be £117m, making him the most expensive British player in history.
This fee surpasses the previous record set earlier this summer when Elliot Anderson moved to Manchester City for £116m. Rogers’s new contract with Chelsea is a seven-year deal.
Rogers expressed his excitement about the move, stating his admiration for Chelsea as a club he has followed since childhood. He also highlighted his enthusiasm for the project under the new manager, Xabi Alonso, and the current squad.
Discussions with Alonso were a significant factor in Rogers’s decision, as he found the manager’s vision for the game aligned with his own playing style. Rogers’s Career and Impact
During his tenure at Aston Villa, Rogers established himself as a prominent young attacking talent in the Premier League. His contributions, including goals and assists, were involved in 40 goals across 85 Premier League appearances. He played a role in Aston Villa achieving a top-four finish and subsequently lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy last season.
Since his senior England debut in November 2024, Rogers has become a regular fixture for the national team, accumulating 22 caps and representing his country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris described Rogers’s signing as a significant acquisition, noting the surprise given that Rogers is moving from a Champions League team to one without European football in the 2026/27 season. Morris has been a long-time admirer of Rogers, tracing his development from his youth days at Manchester City, through his time at Middlesbrough under Michael Carrick, and his further progression at Aston Villa under Unai Emery.
Versatility and Future Role
Rogers’s versatility is seen as a key asset for Chelsea. He is capable of playing in the number 10 role, on both wings, and has even featured as a number eight in a recent England game. This adaptability could offer Xabi Alonso various tactical options, although the exact role Rogers will play will depend on the manager’s preferred system.
The move also brings into focus the potential dynamic between Rogers and Cole Palmer, both of whom are attacking midfielders. Reports indicate that Palmer, who is under a long-term contract, is content at Chelsea, despite some suggestions of a potential return to the North West. The challenge for Alonso will be to effectively integrate both talented players into the same side, a prospect that Rogers and Palmer themselves are reportedly excited about.
Despite interest from other clubs, including Arsenal, who reportedly considered Rogers their primary forward target this summer, Chelsea secured the deal. Arsenal was reportedly unwilling to match the transfer fee agreed upon by Chelsea for the player.
