Gittens reflects on past season and future
Jamie Gittens, a winger for Chelsea, has spoken about his preparations for the upcoming 2026/27 season and his impressions of new manager Xabi Alonso. Gittens’ first season with the West London club was marked by injury issues and a struggle to secure a regular starting position. He joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund in a £51.5 million deal.
Reflecting on the previous campaign, Gittens stated, “It was hard because this was the first muscle injury I have had. I have never had hamstring injuries before. It was a challenge at the start but I am better now.” He added that he feels “much better, more confident now” and that his body is in good condition, with his hamstrings being good. Gittens spent his summer break training in Portugal and Marbella to prepare for the new season.
The 21-year-old expressed his ambition to succeed at Chelsea, a club he described as “big.” He aims to demonstrate his capabilities, having shown “glimpses, small bits” previously. Gittens has set individual objectives for himself, which he has documented.
Alonso’s influence and style of play
Gittens also shared his thoughts on working under Xabi Alonso. He described Alonso as “a very nice guy” who engages with players individually to discuss areas for improvement. Gittens confirmed that Alonso possesses an “aura,” attributing it to his past as a “top player” and his current role as a “top coach.” Alonso’s playing career included stints at Real Madrid and Liverpool, where he was a “world-class midfielder.”
Alonso has reportedly advised Gittens to “keep being positive, taking on players, creating chances and pushing myself to the maximum.” Gittens believes Alonso’s style of play may suit him, noting that last season’s formation was a 4-3-3 with two wingers, which he considers beneficial. He emphasized that having Alonso, a former top player, teach them is advantageous for the team.
The appointment of Alonso provides a fresh start for Gittens, who recorded one goal and five assists in 27 games across all competitions last season. His progress was hindered by a persistent hamstring injury. Gittens is currently with Chelsea for their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.
Pre-season activities and squad developments
Chelsea‘s pre-season schedule includes matches against Western Sydney Wanderers and Tottenham in Oceania. The team will also face Juventus and AC Milan in Hong Kong and Indonesia, respectively, before playing Malaysian Super League side Johor Darul Ta’zim F.C. and concluding their friendly fixtures against Real Sociedad.
In other squad news, Alejandro Garnacho has completed a loan move to Aston Villa. Gittens scored in a 3-0 friendly victory against Bromley, with Joao Pedro and Emmanuel Emegha also finding the net. Chelsea also secured a 3-1 win against Crawley Town. More signings are anticipated before the season begins, with Maxence Lacroix of Crystal Palace reportedly nearing a move to Chelsea. Additionally, Bournemouth has rejected a bid from Chelsea for Alex Scott.

The club has also launched its new away kit for the 2026/27 season, featuring a black base with gold trim, designed to celebrate the club’s ‘Italian Renaissance’ and pay tribute to their 1990s era.
