Donald Trump questions Harry Kane’s defensive role for England in World Cup semi-final

Trump’s comments on England’s tactics
United States President Donald Trump has commented on England’s tactics following their World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina. He specifically questioned the decision to assign Harry Kane a defensive role in the second half of the match. The comments were made during a reception in New York, where Trump was alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Trump referenced having played golf with Kane, describing him as a “fantastic” player. He suggested that making Kane a defensive player after England had taken the lead might have been a mistake. “They took the lead, and they took their best player and put him on defence,” Trump stated, adding, “We got to be a little offensive, right.” He acknowledged his limited knowledge of soccer coaching but found the tactical choice “a little unusual.”
England’s manager, Thomas Tuchel, faced criticism from pundits and supporters after the 2-1 defeat, which saw Argentina score two late goals. Tuchel’s second-half substitutions, which included reverting to a back five and introducing defensive-minded players, were highlighted as contributing factors to Lionel Messi inspiring Argentina’s comeback. Tuchel, however, has maintained his stance on his tactical decisions, stating he does not regret them and was attempting to assist the team.
FIFA and Balogun controversy
During the same reception, Trump also discussed his interaction with FIFA regarding USA striker Folarin Balogun’s one-match suspension. Balogun, who is 25, was initially set to miss his team’s last-16 match against Belgium after receiving a straight red card in a previous round against Bosnia-Herzegovina for a foul on Tarik Muharemovic.
FIFA made a decision to suspend the automatic one-match ban for 12 months, which drew widespread criticism. Trump recounted a conversation with Infantino, stating he made a “complaint” about the situation. He noted that the outcome, where Belgium won and the USA team had all its players, was “so much better the way it worked out because there is no controversy.”
Trump praised Infantino for what he called “another great decision” concerning the suspension of Balogun’s ban. This praise, however, is expected to intensify existing controversies surrounding the incident, as Infantino had previously denied that Trump’s lobbying influenced FIFA’s disciplinary committee, which is stated to be independent.
The public display of mutual congratulation between Trump and Infantino at Trump Tower has been noted as a reminder of their close relationship. Critics argue this relationship could undermine FIFA’s commitment to political neutrality. Despite these concerns, both leaders highlighted the success of the World Cup, with Trump calling it “the most successful sporting event, maybe in the history of the world.”

Infantino echoed this sentiment, stating the tournament had “exceeded expectations” and that “the American dream, Mr President, came to reality.” He described it as “the greatest human, social and cultural event that mankind has ever witnessed.”
Tournament success and ongoing concerns
The World Cup, hosted across the US, Mexico, and Canada, has seen record ticket sales and significant television audiences in the US. The expanded tournament format has provided drama and excitement, with many visitors expressing satisfaction with the stadiums and security arrangements.
However, the tournament has also faced scrutiny regarding the financial costs for fans, leading to questions about FIFA’s revenue generation. Traditionalists have expressed dismay over the introduction of hydration breaks, an expanded half-time break in the final, and discussions about a further expansion to 64 teams, raising fears about the commercialization of the event.
Early in the tournament, various visa-related controversies affected fans, teams, and officials due to US foreign and immigration policies. These issues challenged claims that it would be the most inclusive World Cup ever. Infantino, despite facing claims of losing control of his own tournament, remains confident in his position, partly due to FIFA’s predicted record revenues of $9bn this year, which many countries rely on for football development.
This financial support contributes to Infantino’s significant global backing, making his re-election next year seem probable.

The World Cup 2026 final is scheduled for Sunday at 20:00 BST.
