England coach Thomas Tuchel addresses squad after World Cup semi-final defeat

England coach Thomas Tuchel has addressed his squad, urging them to conclude their World Cup campaign strongly following their semi-final defeat to Argentina. The team returned to their Kansas City base after the loss on Wednesday, preparing for Saturday’s bronze-medal match against France in Miami.
Sources indicate that Tuchel encouraged his players to move past their disappointment and aim for a strong finish to the tournament. Achieving third place would mark England’s best men’s World Cup performance since their victory in 1966. Tuchel reportedly expressed pride in the team’s efforts in North America, which saw the Three Lions reach their fourth World Cup semi-final.
Tactical Decisions Under Scrutiny
The relationship between the 52-year-old German coach and his players has drawn attention following Argentina’s 2-1 victory. Argentina secured the win with two late goals after Anthony Gordon had given England the lead. Reports emerged on Thursday suggesting that several key players were dissatisfied with the team’s instructions after taking the lead.
Tuchel opted for a back five and made defensive substitutions in the closing stages of the match. Lionel Messi then inspired Argentina’s comeback, assisting goals for Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez’s 92nd-minute winner. However, Tuchel has since refuted the notion that a defensive retreat was part of his explicit instructions, stating it was never the plan to drop deeper.
He commented that it might not be in the team’s “DNA” to control the game and possession. Tuchel is anticipated to address his team’s tactical approach during the pre-match news conference for the France game, scheduled for 00:30 BST on Saturday.

Some England players, including senior members, were reportedly perplexed by Tuchel’s defensive substitutions in the semi-final. These players believed the changes hindered their chances of winning rather than improving them. After Gordon’s goal, with the team dropping deeper, Tuchel brought on Ezri Konsa for Gordon and switched to a back-five with more than 30 minutes remaining.
Ten minutes later, Tuchel replaced Declan Rice, who had been dealing with illness and fitness issues, with Nico O’Reilly. This meant England had six defenders on the pitch, with four of them being centre-backs. Harry Kane also moved deeper to assist in defending against Argentina’s attacks, which were spearheaded by Messi.
Those with reservations about the tactics felt England lacked an out-ball, a player to hold up the ball in attacking areas, or someone to run down the flanks to relieve pressure on the defence. Throughout the tournament, England’s attacking strategy had focused on utilising pacy wingers, with Argentina’s full-backs identified as a potential weakness.
Morgan Rogers on the right wing set up Gordon on the left wing for England’s opening goal in the 55th minute. However, Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, and Eberechi Eze remained on the bench. Marcus Rashford was introduced in the 96th minute, by which point England were trailing 2-1 after the late strikes from Fernandez and Martinez.
In the period between Gordon’s goal and Martinez’s stoppage-time winner, England maintained only 12 percent possession. Tuchel later suggested that the issue was systemic within English football, indicating that players struggled to maintain possession under pressure. He did not believe his tactics were incorrect, explaining that his shift to a back five aimed to prevent crosses into England’s box and limit Argentina’s space after they introduced Nico Gonzalez and moved Messi to the right wing in a 4-2-4 formation.

Future Commitments and Player Perspectives
Despite the tactical concerns, there is no indication of a rift within the England squad or animosity towards Tuchel, who is described as a popular and authoritative leader. The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss signed a two-year contract extension in February, having initially been appointed in January 2025 on an 18-month mission to win the 2026 World Cup.
Tuchel reportedly retains the support of the Football Association and is expected to lead the team into the 2028 European Championship, which will be co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland. Tuchel himself has affirmed his “100 per cent” commitment to remaining in his role for Euro 2028.
However, some players reportedly hold a different view, perceiving the substitutions as negative and making it harder for England’s defence to find respite and retain possession. It is unclear how players view Tuchel’s suggestion about a weakness in English football’s DNA regarding possession maintenance compared to Spanish, Argentinian, and Brazilian footballers.
Kane, who will be two weeks shy of his 33rd birthday, expressed his disappointment on social media, stating, “We were close, really close to another final, but it wasn’t enough. We’ve given everything over these last seven weeks, and to fall short is hard to take! I know the expectations are high and rightly so; we’ve been knocking on the door for eight years now but again are missing that final piece of the jigsaw.”
The team is set to play France in Miami for the bronze-medal match on Saturday.
