The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal convened in Benin City today to hear the case challenging the election victory of Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The petition, filed by Ighodalo Asuerinme and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), disputes the declaration of Okpebholo as the duly elected governor following the September 21, 2024, election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Okpebholo the winner with 291,667 votes, while PDP’s Asuerinme secured 247,274 votes.

The petitioners argue that Okpebholo was not validly elected by a majority of lawful votes and claim that the election was marred by substantial irregularities. The case is being heard by a tribunal panel chaired by Hon. Justice Wilfred Kpochi, alongside Justices A.B. Yusuf and A.A. Adewole.

The proceedings are expected to continue as the tribunal reviews the evidence and arguments from both parties.
