April 06, (THEWILL) – Chelsea and Brentford played out a goalless draw at Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday, with Cole Palmer nearly finding a winner in the final moments of the match.
The result marked the first English Premier League clean sheet of the season for Thomas Frank’s Brentford side.
Brentford created the better opportunities in the first half, with Yoane Wissa firing into the side netting early on after Bryan Mbeumo delivered a well-placed cross.
Mbeumo later struck a shot past the post whilst Mikkel Damsgaard squandered a promising chance from close range following good work from Wissa.
The introduction of Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, and Pedro Neto transformed Chelsea’s attacking threat after the interval.
The Blues significantly improved their output, registering 17 shots in the second half compared to just four in the first.
Neto tested Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken with consecutive efforts around the hour mark as Enzo Maresca’s team pushed for a breakthrough.
Brentford, meanwhile, managed only three attempts after the break, having recorded six before half-time in what became an increasingly one-sided contest.
Palmer almost snatched victory for the visitors with the final kick of the game, sending a curling effort narrowly over the crossbar in what would have been a dramatic conclusion to the London derby.
